Q: What is Exercise Physiology? How is Exercise Physiology different from Physiotherapy? When should I consult a physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist?

What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and an Exercise Physiologist?

There is often confusion about how an Exercise Physiologist differs from a Physiotherapist, even amongst health professionals. In fact, many doctors do not understand the difference despite referring patients to both professions. Even though the names of the professions sound similar, there are significant differences between the training, skillset and role of Physiotherapists compared to Exercise Physiologists. The main differences are this:

  • Physiotherapists ARE trained to diagnose the cause of pain and injury

  • Exercise Physiologists ARE NOT trained to diagnose the cause of pain and injury

  • The foundational education for both professions includes understanding and prescribing exercise

  • Exercise Physiologists use exercise as their main form of assessment and treatment

  • Physiotherapists use a range of techniques to assess and treatment clients, including hands-on assessment and treatment (palpation, massage, mobilization, manipulation, trigger points release etc) as well as exercise

When should I consult an Exercise Physiologist or a Physiotherapist?

The answer to this question depends on your personal circumstance. Consider the following examples:

  • If you wish to diagnose and understand the cause of a pain or injury, a Physiotherapist is likely be best for you

  • If you seek the prescription or supervision of exercises and ARE NOT concerned about the cause of a pain or injury, an Exercise Physiologist is likely best for you

  • If you seek the prescription or supervision of exercises and ARE concerned about the cause of a pain or injury, a Physiotherapist is likely best for you

  • If you have questions about which type of exercise if best for a new pain or condition(s), you will likely find Physiotherapy best for you

  • If you have questions about which type of exercise if best for a long-standing condition(s), you may find both professions helpful and so may choose based on the availability and compatibility of various practitioners
